Good question! The answer is no. If you work on the side in your spare time you don’t need self-employed status as long as certain conditions are fulfilled. Learn all about it in this blog.

Do you need to be self-employed to have a sideline?

Marvellous, isn’t it? Since 15 March 2015 you can make a pretty penny on the side without having self-employed status. You can make as much as €6,130 a year without having to pay taxes or social security contributions.

Still... not everyone can earn an additional income tax-free: this must involve odd jobs performed for fellow citizens, work carried out for an association or extra earnings through recognised platforms.

Service between citizens

This applies to people who do odd jobs for someone else: maintenance work, child care, tutoring, administrative assistance, etc.

Work for associations

This is work performed for non-profit socio-cultural organisations, de facto associations or public authorities. These services include working as a guide, giving trainings, guiding excursions, ...

The sharing economy

These are services offered to someone. Everyone is allowed to have a sideline in the sharing economy. The only rule is that the self-employed cannot engage in the same activities as for their main activity. You do have to declare your revenue on your tax return.

There you go, now you know you don’t have to be self-employed to work on the side.
