5G or straight to 6G?

The big evolution is what we are experiencing now: the move from 4G to 5G. With 5G we enter a whole new environment giving us network slicing and a latency that is almost zero. The step from 5G to 6G is rather similar to the transition from 3G to 4G: more of the same, without really profound changes.

The most important feature of 6G is that it involves even higher frequencies, which will allow even more devices to connect to the network simultaneously. We should therefore mainly see 6G as an improved version of 5G. It is all about even faster and even more, with a throughput or flow of data that will reach up to 100 Gbit.

We do not expect 6G before 2030. So the 6G rollout is not for just yet. The evolution of mobile network technology is phased. For 6G, all countries are still in the research phase, so the standards have not yet been set and testing is still ongoing. That process usually takes a few years. Only then can product development begin. Simply skipping 5G and immediately switching to 6G would not be a logical step and could also take some time.
