5G vs 4G: what's the difference?

  • Downloads: Download a 1 GB movie in just 8 seconds, a significant improvement over 4G.
  • Speed: 5G offers speeds up to 1 Gbps, far surpassing 4G's 110 Mbps.
  • Energy efficiency: More eco-friendly, 5G uses up to 90% less energy for data transfer.

Proximus 5G+: even more powerful 5G

What is 5G+?

5G+ is an evolution of 5G that runs on a standalone network, independent from 4G.

Faster, smoother, more responsive, and more secure, it intelligently adapts connectivity to your everyday needs.

Proximus is the first operator to launch 5G+ in Belgium!

What 5G+ changes for you

  • Ultra-fast speeds for streaming, downloading, and sharing
  • Smoother video calls, even while on the move
  • Clearer call quality
  • Enhanced security to better protect your data
  • Technology that uses less power
  • A network designed for connected devices and augmented reality

Frequently asked questions about 5G and 5G+

You will need:

On the other hand, for 5G+ the specifications are a bit more advanced. You will need:

  • A smartphone compatible with the Proximus 5G+ network. Currently, only the Pixel 9 and 10 support this new technology. We are working closely with manufacturers to expand the range of smartphones that can support 5G+ as quickly as possible.
  • A 5G connection on your mobile device: the network coverage map is available, and if 5G is available in your area, 5G+ will be as well. Currently, Proximus 5G already covers 92% of the Belgian territory.
  • A 5G+ mobile plan: check the mobile plans for private or business customers. Currently, only the Mobile Unlimited subscription offers the possibility to connect to 5G+.
  • A 5G+ compatible SIM card: Besides having a plan that offers 5G+, you must also have a specific 5G+ SIM card.
  • With 5G and 5G+ you can surf even faster than today on the existing 4G networks.
  • At the same time, you will notice a significant improvement in response time or latency, making the mobile network and applications even more responsive.
  • We use growing data volumes (for video, music, gaming, etc.) and a growing number of devices (smartphones, sensors, video cameras …), all of which are connected simultaneously. 5G is the solution that supports an even greater number of devices, without any loss of quality and with greater reliability.
  • 5G and 5G+ are also greener as less energy is used to transfer data.

In February 2025, Testachats ranked Proximus #1 for mobile coverage in Belgium, with an average score of 34,487 points, ahead of all other operators. These results are based on over 56,000 measurements collected via the BeCover+ app, evaluating browsing, streaming, and daily network stability. Proximus aims for 100% nationwide 5G coverage by 2026.

Want to know if you can already benefit from 5G where you live and work?

Make sure you check the 5G map regularly.

5G allows networks to carry large data volumes more efficiently than 4G.

These are the 5 advantages of 5G:

  1. Faster speeds for downloading movies and series or for video chatting on the go.
  2. High responsiveness for data-intensive activities, such as cloud gaming or virtual reality.
  3. Reliable connections that allow you to stream content from virtually anywhere.
  4. More connected devices using a faster signal in the same geographical area, during large events, for example: 4G connects about 4,000 devices per square kilometer versus about 1 million devices with 5G.
  5. Low latency to enable drones and self-driving vehicles.

The Internet of Things, which comes down to connecting and adding intelligence to things like cars, sensors and robots, will also benefit from 5G. This technology will facilitate smart cities, connected agriculture, self-driving cars and transport...

With your current smartphone, you can make calls and surf on the 2G/4G network. If you want to surf or make calls on the 5G network, you need a device compatible with 5G, otherwise it won't be able to detect this network.

Are you planning to purchase a new smartphone? Check out our current range of smartphones compatible with 5G. We are constantly working with suppliers to expand our range of 5G-compatible smartphones as quickly as possible.

Finally, to fully enjoy the benefits of 5G, you also need a 5G tariff plan, which you can choose for private or professional use.

The launch of 5G does not involve additional CO2 emissions, on the contrary.

As a technology 5G is more energy-efficient than 4G and 2G, allowing for the transfer of more data with the same power consumption and also making the technology more environment-friendly.

Moreover, 100% of Proximus’ electricity supply comes from green energy, such as solar panels and wind turbines.

In all European countries, 5G is deployed within the framework of the safety standards set by international and independent organizations. As an independent organisation, the opinion of the World Health Organization (WHO) is clear: there is no evidence to suggest that the technology on which 5G is based endangers public health.

5G operates within the same frequency range as existing 2G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks. In the course of the last 30 years, numerous studies on the subject have not been able to establish any negative impact whatsoever.

At Proximus we address these concerns through constant research into new technologies and by keeping our customers informed and advising them on the necessary precautions.

At home or at the office our smartphones are often connected to Wi-Fi to stream, surf or make calls. When we go outside and the modem is no longer in range, the device we are using switches to the mobile network. Our smartphones make the switch automatically, so you don’t have to do anything. We mostly use Wi-Fi at home or at work and 5G or 5G+ is mainly useful on the go.

The latency is the reaction time or the time it takes for data to go from your device to its destination and back.

Thanks to the lower latency 5G and 5G+ are offering, you will be able to do everything much faster and without delay, e.g.

  • Watch a live concert in real time from a distance with a hologram of the singer and his band on stage.
  • Virtual reality and latency will offer you a real shopping experience, as if you were visiting the store in person!

Yes, you need a specific 5G mobile plan. Check out our mobile plans for private or business customers.

However, 5G+ is reserved for customers who have chosen Mobile Unlimited.

Just like bank details, telecommunications data are perfectly protected nowadays, thanks in part to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force in 2018. The 5G network changes nothing in this respect.

Moreover, 5G and 5G+ have new security features and is designed with an end-to-end security approach to better protect the network and your data.

In addition, our suppliers and partners must comply with our (contractually binding) security requirements. Also, our security measures are evaluated on an ongoing basis to ensure the protection of our customers and our infrastructure.
